Last weekend I visited Hixon Green over in Hove; it’s a relatively new coffee and wine bar which also caters for brunch, lunch and Sunday roasts.
I’d heard some pretty great reviews and had also seen it on some of my fellow blogger’s instagrams – a trustworthy source! Having not been for brunch since before Christmas I thought it was essential that I got one booked in, and why not try somewhere new? PERFECT.
The first thing I’m going to mention is the interior decor.
IT. IS. TO. DIE. FOR.
It’s full of navy blue suede chairs, marble tables, gold accents and beige leather sofas. It’s my Pinterest come to life. As you come into the entrance one side of the room is designed for coffee and cakes with more relaxed style seating and then the other for side is designed for ‘proper’ dining. There’s a large central marble and gold bar with stool seating around it. I really liked this set up, and the separation made it feel well organised.
Of course we opted for the more formal seating as we knew we wanted to feast on some of their brunch dishes. The staff were so friendly and attentive; we ordered coffee’s which arrived within about 5 minutes in stunning blue china and then after much deliberation ordered our food – I went for the buttermilk pancakes with blueberry compote and cinnamon cream and maple syrup and Lana chose the shaksuka.
The coffees were delicious; I’m a bit of a coffee snob so I was very happy – and by this time it was about 10:30am and I hadn’t yet had caffeine, so things were getting desperate!
Our food arrived quite swiftly. It looked absolutely delicious and we got stuck in (lol who am I kidding, we made sure we got the perfect instagram and then tucked in!). Lana was raving about her shaksuka but as I was tucking into my pancakes I started to notice that it wasn’t cooked all the way through. With such a large pancake I was worried that might be the case; the blueberry compote and cinnamon cream was delicious but unfortunately I had to send my pancakes back. I ordered some avo and poached eggs instead but because they were so busy it took a little longer than we’d hoped.
The staff were so helpful and apologetic *the waitress asked the chef to try the pancake and he’d said he would have sent it back too*. In the end I ordered another coffee and had a huge slice of their mocha cake… now this was something to talk about. All of their cakes looked lush; I’m desperate to try their raspberry, white chocolate and coconut cake.
There was such a nice relaxed ambiance, it was a really comfortable place to sit and chat! Another bonus… it’s dog friendly?! We had two little pups on the tales next to us which were too gorgeous.
So although I’d been a little disappointed with my pancakes absolutely everything else about my experience at Hixon Green I couldn’t fault and I will definitely be heading back to try some more things on their menu as well as their variety of cakes!
I recommend you go and pay a visit if you’re near by.
Have a great weekend lovelies!
