I think most people have trouble sleeping at some point. I tend to have phases were I sleep really well and then phases where I hardly sleep at all – I find my sleepless spells are influenced by my stress levels. So in order to try and prevent this and keep my stress levels as low as possible, in the evenings there’s a few things I’ve adopted as routine for when I need to relax and switch off.
The first thing I tend to do is put my hair up, take off my bra, chuck on the comfiest clothes I can find and remove my makeup (if I’ve bothered to put any on) – this instantly makes me feel better. If I’m comfy – I’m happy.
Generally for ease and speed I’m a shower person; however on the days where I’m feeling a little overwhelmed and like I need to chill the F out I’ll run myself a bubble bath and use some of my favourite products. At the moment this consists of the Laura Mercier Creme Brûlée bath soufflé, The Body Shop vanilla pumpkin shower cream and whatever LUSH bath bomb I have to hand. I get bored of just sitting in the bath after about two minutes so I usually scroll through social media or watch something on Netflix (CURRENTLY; the last season of Orange Is The New Black – FINALLY!). I also like to do a face mask whilst I’m in the bath, I’ve been loving the L’Oreal Pure Clay Detox mask.
After having relaxed in the bath for about half a hour, I then like to use my evening skincare. I’m going to do a detailed evening skincare routine in a couple of weeks so look out for that. But once I feel clean and refreshed, I will put on my favourite pyjamas; I don’t know about you but for me it’s all the little things that make the difference. I’ll pop downstairs and make myself a honey and chamomile tea, I’ve found this to be the most soothing.
I take my tea back upstairs to bed, turn on all of my fairy lights and light a couple of candles – I’m loving these autumn scented candles which I brought in HomeSense. I try to create a relaxed environment, ideally I would then have ‘screen free’ time… but we all know that sitting in bed and scrolling through Instagram or Pinterest is just too tempting so I allow myself 20 minutes to do that whilst I drink my tea. I am going to be making a conscious effort to read more so hopefully I’ll be able to get into the habit of reading before bed rather than scrolling!
After brushing my teeth, I blow out all of the candles and spritz some of the ThisWorks Pillow Spray over my bedding. Then, the biggest aid for a good nights sleep for me is the Calm App; it can be used for mindfulness, meditation, relaxation and sleep. I simply pop on one of the sleep stories and within about ten minutes I’ve drifted off. A personal fave is the Waterfall sleep story! If you’re finding it a challenge to get a good nights sleep, download it and give it a try.
I can guarantee after this routine I’m super relaxed, ready for a great nights sleep and with the combination of the Sleep story and Pillow Spray, I give it ten minutes max before I’m out for the count.
Hopefully you’ll find this helpful and can put it to good use in the week coming. If you have any other evening relaxation tips please let me know!
Lots of love
